A Visit from Aberdeen Student Show

10th April 2024

The team from the Aberdeen Student Show visited our Sounds of Music class yesterday to learn about all things Music 4 U!

We were delighted to be chosen as one of their Silver Award charities and our participants surprised our visitors with a performance of the much-loved anthem of The Student Show ‘Spirit of Show’.

Our participants really enjoyed chatting with the SS team and a real highlight was Corey eloquently describing how he feels about choosing the right songs to perform “If the song doesn’t leave me alone, it means it’s telling you something”. Wow!

THANK YOU NORTHFIELD ACADEMY!

27th February 2024

A huge thank you to David J Cadenhead and his students at Northfield Academy as they get to work bringing our beloved bench back to its former glory!

The bench, a creation of renowned designer Jay Blades MBE, was presented to our Founder & Creative Director Debra as a symbol of recognition for her unwavering dedication to the community. Originally placed outside Aberdeen Arts Centre, the bench has weathered the elements over the years.

In an effort to preserve its significance and showcase it inside The Ivories Coffee Shop Dave answered our callout for a talented carpenter who could help us restore the piece, and we can't wait to follow the student’s progress!

30th January 2024

Classes really are back into the swing of things here at Merchant’s House and they’re bigger and better than ever!

Helping us along the way is our new Bluetooth Speaker, kindly donated by Adam Wilson at PCL Live

Adam was kind enough to let us borrow a speaker for our Christmas in the Quad performance last month and upon seeing what a huge difference it made to our ability to perform easily and readily, he offered to purchase a speaker we could keep and use for all our future pop up shows!

Thank you, Adam!

BEN’S GUITAR PROJECT

25th January 2024

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our brand new initiative ‘Ben’s Guitar’!

This very special project has been curated by Music 4 U to offer guitar lessons at no cost to young people who would benefit from this life-changing opportunity to learn a musical instrument.

Our Creative Director, Debra, was inspired to develop the project following the kind donation of a beloved guitar by a bereaved parent following the loss of her only son, Ben.

Ben’s Mum donated the guitar to Music 4 U with the idea that it may be auctioned or sold to raise some funds for us, but upon hearing more about the charity’s ‘no barriers’ approach in supporting young people to fulfil their dreams, she and Debra decided the guitar could be put to great use; teaching the next generation of young musicians who wouldn’t have the means to buy a guitar or afford lessons.

We are delighted to announce that funding has been secured for this exciting project thanks to the Gordon Fraser Charitable Trust and we are ready to start welcoming applications.

If you know a young person who would thrive as part of ‘Ben’s Guitar’ - apply below!

HAPPY 18TH BIRTHDAY MUSIC 4 U!

We’ve Come A Long, Long Way TOGETHER!

On 12th December 2023, Music 4 U turned 18, and those Fatboy Slim lyrics have never felt more appropriate! The atmosphere in The Ivories Coffee Shop was absolutely electric as we celebrated this important milestone in the charity’s history.

The drinks were flowing, the pineapple on sticks went down a treat, and of course, there was music, music and more music!

It was such a joy to watch our participants, families, and supporters sing their hearts out, laugh and have fun together throughout the night. Thank you so much for coming!

It’s hard to believe it’s been eighteen years since that special letter from OSCR hit the doormat and we officially became a Scottish Charity!

Music 4 U began because we noticed a barrier to the performing arts. Schools had begun governing their own budgets, and in a bid to achieve more academically, subjects like music and the arts were the first to go.

Another sad fact was that children from challenging backgrounds and those with additional support needs were locked out of traditional music and performance classes. And yet, we knew these children were the ones who would benefit the most from being able to express themselves in a judgement-free environment.

To say we started from humble beginnings is an understatement.

We managed to secure a base in Dyce with the help of the local church, which gave us a room for one hour each week. From there, we set up a singing club. We made some flyers and dropped them off at local primary schools. Within a fortnight, 14 youngsters had signed up, and Music Makers was born, which was one day to become Music 4 U. With one CD, a notebook, a handful of percussion instruments, lots of enthusiasm and a great deal of determination, we were off to a strong start!

The appetite for what we were doing was there. Budding young singers attended regularly, and they were hungry for more. Watching children with additional support needs and those who were just a little shy come into their own was a privilege. Pretty quickly, we realised that not only were we helping these young people to develop a routine, grow in confidence, and express themselves amongst their peers, but we were also supporting their extended families.

Many of our young participants came from lone parent families. Mums, Dads and Guardians were all benefiting from the support and from seeing their children and young people funnel their energy in such a positive way. It was having a wonderful effect. We grew strong relationships in the community. The legacy of which lasts to this day, and we STILL have some of our original members!

In December 2005, Music Makers became Music 4 U and a registered charity in Scotland!

To date, we have secured funding from the People's Postcode Lottery Community Fund, the National Lottery People’s Project, BBC Children in Need and many more. This funding allowed us to extend all our projects, and our participants have also been able to take part in hundreds of public performances!

None of this would be possible without the support of the team we have built.

Our incredible tutors and management team work tirelessly to adapt and improve what we do. We are learning all the time, and occasionally, we have to pause and reflect on where we have come from and where it is all going.

Still, the core mission of Music 4 U is the same - to be recognised as a provider of innovative, person-centred opportunities within the performing arts.

FESTIVE PERFORMANCE 2023

9th December 2023

Our SONGbook, UpSTAGE, VOCALize and Sounds of Music Saturday students had a BALL singing festive favourites in Curated in the Quad at Codonas' Aberdeen Christmas Village.

They sang oodles of beloved Christmas songs including Jingle Bells, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Jingle Bell Rock, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, Merry Christmas Everyone, Winter Wonderland and We Wish You a Merry Christmas!

They even did a special rendition of Music 4 U’s very own Christmas Carol - Baby Boy!

A huge thank you to Ross at Pigeon Media Solutions for sharing these fabulous photos with us!

I AM 2023

A huge congratulations to our incredible tutors, hard-working team and talented students for such fantastic performances during I AM 2023.

We hope everyone who attended had an unforgettable experience – here’s what some of the audience had to say:

“I thought the entire evening had gone up several levels in professionalism, in so many ways, from technical support, continuity, engagement and artistic development – you should be very very proud!”

“Venue and layout – perfect!”

“What an amazing show and how incredible having it at the Beach Ballroom!”

“I really wish there was a Music 4 U when I was a child – What an inspirational evening!”

“We took a friend and it was her first time at a Music 4 U show. She was amazed at how professional it all was and what a range of music! Star Quality, she will definitely be back for another.”

Joe’s Blog 2023

Joe's Blog 2023, performed by our gifted tutors and pupils at the Beach Ballroom on October 26, 2023, was a huge hit. This jukebox musical, written by Debra Baxter, Music 4 U Founder & Creative Director, explores the effects of cyberbullying and how to overcome it with support from peers. Everyone enrolled in Music 4 U is invited to take part.

Our VIP audience of supporters, local schools and youth groups clapped, cheered, and even learned a few things along the way.

We are immensely grateful to The National Lottery Community Fund Scotland - Young Start, who fully funded this heartfelt project.

DANCING IN SEPTEMBER

Our Dancing in September event was full of memories, unending fun, and amazing moments.

The afternoon tea was delicious, and our talented students and staff entertained the guests with a variety of tunes from the '70s. Rock n roll bingo, Noddy Holders hat and Mick Jaggers hips games generated a lot of laughter.

Thank you to everyone who attended; we hope you had as much fun as we did. Our amazing volunteers, tutors, staff and talented students made it all possible.
